C'est parce que l'ouvrage de Pierre Batiffol pose le problème le plus important de la recherche théologique contemporaine, celui de l'Église, que sa réédition s'imposait. En effet, il ne s'agit ni d'un traité théologique de l'Église ni d'une histoire du christianisme mais plus précisément d'une étude historique sur la nature et la structure de l'Église durant les trois premiers siècles. Or, si les études sur l'Église dans le Nouveau Testament se sont multipliées ces dernières années, il n'en est pas de même pour la période postérieure. En quels termes se pose le problème –; relevé par certains théologiens contemporains –;, de la continuité ou de la rupture entre période apostolique et Église primitive. Cette question capitale, fondamentale, Pierre Batiffol l'exprime ainsi : la communauté de la foi, hiérarchiquement structurée, qui nous est attestée dès la fin du premier siècle, fait-elle partie de l'essence du christiansme originel, ou est-elle la création de la génération post-apostolique ? Pierre Batiffol explique que, si l'Église naissante s'est inspirée de structures qui existaient dans le judaïsme, elle est irréductible à celui-ci et s'enracine directement dans le Christ historique. Quant aux développements doctrinaux et institutionnels des tout premiers siècles, ils sont la pure efflorescence de la Pentecôte et ne déploient que l'authentique tradition apostolique. -- It is precisely because Pierre Batiffol's book raises the most important issue in contemporary theological research - that of the Church itself - that a reprint was imperative. Neither a theological treatise on the Church or a history of Christianity, it is in fact an historic study of the nature and structure of the Church during the first three centuries of our era. Although studies of the Church in the New Testament have been numerous in recent years, the same cannot be said for the previous period. How exactly should we approach this issue of the continuity or break between the apostolic period and the early Church, raised by certain contemporary theologians? Pierre Batiffol expresses this major, fundamental question in this manner: Was this hierarchically-structured religious community, shown to exist from the end of the 1st century onwards, an essential part of original Christianity, or was it the creation of the post-apostolic generation? Pierre Batiffol explains that although the nascent Church was inspired by structures that existed in Judaism, it was not simply a carbon copy; but directly rooted in the historical figure of Christ. As for the doctrinal and institutional developments of those first centuries, they are the pure efflorescence of the Pentecost, deploying only the authentic apostolic tradition.
