Edith Stein s'intéresse à des domaines très divers : politique, éthique, anthropologie, pédagogie, théorie de la connaissance, métaphysique, religion, etc. Or cela même qui fait la richesse de son œuvre –; et ouvre au chercheur des champs d'investigation très vastes –; constitue pour le lecteur qui souhaite se familiariser avec cette pensée une difficulté majeure. En effet, l'étendue des questions abordées et le caractère hautement personnel de l'œuvre steinienne posent, de manière particulièrement aiguë, le problème de savoir sous quel angle l'aborder pour en saisir l'unité. Pourtant Edith Stein nous indique elle-même le centre de gravité de son itinéraire intellectuel et spirituel : " la constitution de la personne humaine ". La cohérence de l'engagement intellectuel et existentiel d'Edith Stein réside précisément dans cette quête constante de la vérité de l'homme, selon un mouvement qui porte toujours plus haut la compréhension de la personne et l'accomplissement du sens de son être. Une pensée indissociable d'une démarche vitale, puisqu'elle est surtout un chemin d'unification de la personne humaine à partir de son intériorité. But although this fact constitutes the richness of her work and opens up vast areas of investigation to the researcher, it also constitutes a major difficulty for the reader wishing to become more familiar with an oeuvre that is not easily accessible. The vast nature of the issues she treats, and the highly personal nature of Stein's work, together pose the problem of finding an approach that will lead to an understanding of its unity. Yet Edith Stein herself points to the centre of gravity of her intellectual and spiritual itinerary: "The constitution of the human person'. The coherence of Edith Stein's intellectual and existential commitment resides precisely in that constant quest for the truth about mankind, which gradually increases in understanding of the human person and the realization of the meaning of being. This book identifies an axis that runs throughout Edith Stein's anthropological thinking - thinking that cannot be accessed without a vital approach, because it is, above all, a path of unification based on the human person's inner life. What Edith Stein has to say about the human person brings us to the heart of the anthropological challenge of our times: "Who is man, and what does it signify to live with all the meaning of his being in an authentic manner?' This question addresses all of us, because no one can avoid questioning the sense of his own life if he wants to live his human existence as fully as possible. As we listen to Edith Stein, we discover a close guide and a friend who opens up a path enlightened by inner freedom, and life lived to the full.
