Cet ouvrage explore le long conflit qui divise le catholicisme français du second XVIIe siècle autour de la morale, depuis les premières escarmouches du début du siècle jusqu'aux condamnations prononcées par le clergé de France en 1700. L'étude de ce conflit repose sur la mise en relation de deux réalités culturelles distinctes : la polémique et la théologie. Elle reprend et inscrit dans une perspective de moyen terme une série d'épisodes et de phases d'affrontement avant et après la célèbre campagne des " Provinciales ". Cette enquête souligne combien la polémique devient un trait caractéristique de la culture du catholicisme moderne. Le conflit autour de la théologie frappe par son efficacité, et sa capacité à construire des traditions idéologiques créatrices d'identité. L'étude permet de mieux saisir les glissements sociaux à l'œuvre dans l'histoire de ce conflit culturel. Au-delà de l'intervention du laïcat, c'est d'abord et avant tout la prise de pouvoir de l'instance du public sur les questions religieuses que la polémique autorise, à une période où s'affirment les nouveaux " pouvoirs de la littérature ". Cependant, ce travail signale aussi son échec partiel. Les évolutions doctrinales sont lentes et fragiles. Si une culture de la rigueur morale s'affirme, la rupture rigoriste est moins radicale qu'elle ne le proclame. La force des formes de l'élaboration théologique préserve de nombreux ressorts d'une culture théologique indulgente. De fait, si l'étude de la polémique permet de percevoir la profondeur de la politisation des rapports ecclésiaux, l'examen de la production théologique montre également l'irréductibilité de la tension entre un savoir institué et sa mise en circulation devant le public. La culture confessionnelle du catholicisme français apparaît alors comme prise dans une contradiction fondamentale. -- This book explores the long conflict that divided French Catholicism of the second half of the 17th century on the subject of morals, from the first skirmishes at the beginning of that century until the condemnations pronounced by the French clergy in 1700. The study of this conflict is based on a consideration of two distinct cultural realities in relation to each other: polemic and theology. It revisits a series of episodes and periods of confrontation before and after the famous "Provinciales' campaign, placing them in a mid-term perspective. This investigation reveals to what extent polemic became a characteristic trait of the culture of modern Catholicism. The conflict around theology is striking in its efficiency and its capacity to construct ideological traditions of identity. This study brings us deeper understanding of the social drift within the history of this cultural conflict. Apart from the intervention of the laity, polemic first authorized the public's seizure of power in matters of religion, at a time when the "powers of literature' were once more being proclaimed. Yet this work also illustrates its partial failure. Doctrinal evolutions are slow and fragile. Although a culture of moral discipline gained strength, the rigorist rupture was less radical than it appeared to be. The force of formal theological elaboration provides protection from an indulgent theological culture. In fact, although the study of polemic reveals how deeply politicized ecclesial rapports became. An examination of the theological resources also reveals the tension – irreducible - between established knowledge and its circulation to the public. The confessional culture of French Catholicism seems to be caught up in a fundamental contradiction.
