Saint Thomas d'Aquin est élevé au titre de Docteur de l'Église en 1567, après avoir été la référence de théologie des Pères du concile de Trente. Cette reconnaissance insigne et universelle du Maître en Écritures Saintes du XIIIe siècle a-t-elle provoqué à l'aube du XVIIe siècle une évolution de sa représentation iconographique ? Proposant d'abord une rétrospective de sa représentation à travers l'évolution de ses attributs iconographiques, cette étude explore ensuite le « visage baroque » du Docteur angélique, à partir d'un riche corpus d'oeuvres picturales et graphiques de la fin du XVIe et début du XVIIe siècle. Les conclusions qui se dessinent ne sont pas surprenantes : l'Aquinate des grands retables et des frontispices de thèse de l'époque apparaît non seulement comme l'effigie d'un Ordre, mais aussi comme celle de l'orthodoxie d'une doctrine catholique, en pleine réaffirmation d'elle-même.--Saint Thomas Aquinas was made a Doctor of the Church in 1567, after having been a reference in the theology of the Fathers of the Council of Trent. Did this great and universal recognition of the 13th century Master of the Holy Scriptures provoke an evolution in the saint's iconographic representation at the dawn of the 17th century? After presenting a retrospective of his representation through the evolution of his visual attributes, this study then explores the ‘baroque face' of Doctor Angelicus, drawing on a rich corpus of pictorial and graphic works from the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th. The resulting conclusions are not surprising: the saint we see on great altarpieces and in the frontispieces of theses appears not only to be the effigy of an Order, but also that of an orthodoxy of Catholic doctrine, firmly proclaiming itself.
