Né à Fuenllana en 1486, mort à Valence en 1555, Thomas de Villeneuve prit l'habit des Augustins vers l'âge de trente ans. Plusieurs fois prieur puis provincial de son ordre, il fut nommé évêque de Valence en 1544. Reconnu et vénéré pour sa prédication et son grand souci des pauvres, il est un des grands maîtres spirituels du XVIe siècle, l'un des plus importants de l'école augustinienne de spiritualité. S'appuyant sur ses enseignements, Jaime Garcia nous offre un petit traité de vie spirituelle très accessible, un véritable traité sur l'amitié dans la belle et grande tradition augustinienne. Pour rencontrer Dieu et en vivre il faut commencer par être soi-même. C'est le principe de l'intériorité. Or, l'homme dépasse l'homme : il est image de Dieu. L'image doit être tout orientée vers son modèle. Jésus par le mystère de l'Incarnation vient nous montrer ce que nous sommes et ce que nous devons être. Au plus profond de nous-mêmes, Dieu a placé une échelle qui nous conduit à Lui. Le Christ nous montre comment gravir les degrés de cette échelle. L'Esprit-Saint nous donne la force pour monter les degrés. Le but et le contexte de cette ascension, c'est l'amitié de Dieu. La prière du Notre Père, les Béatitudes, l'amitié maternelle de la Vierge Marie et l'Eucharistie modèlent notre amitié à l'image de l'amitié de Dieu. Mais celle-ci est ouverte : elle nous conduit aux autres, eux aussi étant appelés à cette même amitié. Several times prior then provincial superior of his order, he was appointed Bishop of Valence in 1544. Respected and venerated for his preaching and his great concern for the poor, he is one of the great spiritual masters of the 16th century and one of the most outstanding of the Augustinian school of spirituality. Drawing from his teachings, Jaime Garcia brings us an accessible little treatise of spiritual life, an authentic dissertation on friendship in the beautiful and generous Augustinian tradition. To meet God and live with him one must begin by being oneself - that is the principle of interiority. But man goes beyond man: he is made in God's image. The image must be entirely directed towards its model. Jesus, through the mystery of Incarnation, came to show us what we are and what we ought to be. Deep down, God has placed a ladder within us that leads to Him. Christ shows us how to ascend that ladder step by step. The Holy Spirit gives us the force to go from rung to rung. The aim and the context of our ascension is the friendship of God. The Our Father, the Beatitudes, the motherly friendship of the Virgin Mary and the Eucharist, they all model our friendship on the image of God's. But that friendship is open: it leads us to others, who are also called to that same friendship. Together we become the builders of those communities of friends who open the way, with Christ and in his Church, to the salvation of the world.
