Écrit à l'intention d'un public cultivé par des spécialistes du soufisme persan et turc, ce livre rassemble, pour la première fois dans une langue occidentale, l'essentiel de ce que l'on doit savoir sur la confrérie Mawlaviyya, aussi célèbre que méconnue, autrement appelée ordre des Derviches tourneurs. Aucun des différents aspects littéraires, doctrinaux, historiques, anthropologiques et symboliques du phénomène n'a été négligé. Le lecteur y trouvera ainsi des indications biographiques sur Jalâl al-dîn Rûmî, l'inspirateur de l'ordre, qui tentent de reconstituer sa personnalité authentique et de synthétiser au mieux les points essentiels de sa pensée mystique et de sa poétique enracinées dans le soufisme et la littérature persane classique. Il y découvrira aussi l'évolution historique de la confrérie, des renseignements inédits sur son mode de fonctionnement – fondé sur une sociabilité mystique soufie –, ses développements doctrinaux et la codification progressive des rituels de noviciat et d'investiture. Every aspect of the phenomenon is covered: literary, doctrinal, historical, anthropological or symbolic. In this book, the reader will find biographical information about Jalâl al-dîn Rûmi, who inspired the order, which aims to reveal his true personality and to make as fine a synthesis as possible of the salient points of his mystical thinking and poetics, both rooted in Sufism and classical Persian literature. The book also reveals the history of the Brotherhood, previously-unpublished information about its functioning – based on Sufic mystic sociability, its doctrinal evolution and the gradual codification of its probationary and investiture rituals. Finally, a considerable part of this study has been devoted to the ceremony of the mystic dance (the "samâ'', or "mukabele'), in which we find descriptions of the ritualising stages of what initially was an ecstatic dance of spontaneity, the symbolic interpretations that have been attributed to it and how they have been received in the West.
