Dans les années 1910, les moines russes du Mont Athos s'engagèrent dans une ardente controverse sur la vénération du nom de Dieu. Le monachisme athonite se trouva bientôt divisé en deux camps ennemis, opposant les « onomatodoxes » (adorateurs du nom de Dieu) aux « onomatomaques », ayant pris position contre la vénération du nom de Dieu. Le débat onomatodoxe dépasse cependant le cadre de la controverse athonite, et la présente recherche met en évidence sa préhistoire multiséculaire à partir de sources hébraïques, grecques, syriaques, slavonnes et russes. Le livre propose une étude de la vénération du nom de Dieu dans la Bible, dans la tradition patristique et dans les traditions ascétiques de l'Orient chrétien, ainsi que dans les oeuvres des théologiens russes. Un chapitre entier est consacré à l'ouvrage du moine Hilarion « Sur les monts du Caucase » (1907) et à la controverse onomatodoxe dont il est à l'origine. Plusieurs thèmes reviennent constamment au cours de cette étude : la conception biblique du nom de Dieu et sa réception dans la tradition théologique, ascétique et liturgique de l'Église orthodoxe la doctrine patristique des noms de Dieu la conception chrétienne du nom en général et de la relation entre nom et objet nommé le sens du nom « Jésus » et la vénération de ce nom dans la pratique liturgique de l'Église orthodoxe la théorie et la pratique de la prière de Jésus.--In the 1910s, the Russian monks of Mount Athos became involved in a heated controversy about the veneration of God's name. The Athonite monarchism soon found itself divided into two enemy camps, opposing the ‘imiaslavtsy' (those who glorified the Name of God) and the ‘imiabortsy', who were against the veneration of God's Name. However, the onomatodoxical debate extended beyond the confines of the Athonite controversy, and present research, based on Hebrew, Greek, Syrian, Slavonic and Russian sources, reveals its multi-secular prehistory. This book presents a study of the veneration of God's name in the Bible, the patristic tradition and the ascetic traditions of the Christian Orient, as well as the works of Russian theologians. An entire chapter is devoted to the monk Hilarion's ‘In the Caucasus Mountains' (1907) and the onomatodoxical controversy it provoked. Many themes constantly recur in the course of this study: the Biblical conception of God's name and its reception in the theological, ascetic and liturgical tradition of the Orthodox Church the patristic doctrine of God's names the Christian concept of the name in general and of the relation between name and named object the meaning of the name ‘Jesus' and the veneration of this name in the liturgical practice of the Orthodox Church the theory and practice of the Jesus Prayer.
