Le livre appelé Pontifical contient l'ensemble des rites effectués par l'évêque ; il est donc le livre de l'évêque. Outre les célébrations ordinairement réservées aux ecclésiastiques, il définit l'ensemble des rites qui, durant tout le Moyen Âge et bien au-delà, rassemblaient les foules des laïcs dans les cathédrales aux grands jours de l'année. " Le Pontifical de la curie romaine ", confectionné au XIIIe siècle, représente un moment essentiel d'une normalisation voulue pas les papes, au terme d'un lent travail qui s'échelonne du VIIIe au XIIe siècle. Il inspire, en outre, très directement, un autre Pontifical, celui confectionné par l'évêque Guillaume Durand de Mende (mort en 1296), lequel paracheva la diffusion de la liturgie romaine dans toute l'Église latine. Il marque donc une étape essentielle dans l'histoire non seulement de la liturgie catholique, mais aussi dans celle du christianisme occidental. Parce qu'il révèle le noyau des mystères chrétiens, les familiers de l'anthropologie historique peuvent découvrir dans ce livre le sens plénier de chacun des rites les plus fondamentaux du christianisme et comprendre ce qu'en percevaient les participants d'autrefois. -- The book we call the Pontificale contains all the Episcopal rites; it is the bishop's book. Apart from the celebrations usually reserved for men of the Church, it defines all the rites that used to bring crowds of lay people to the cathedrals on the feast days of the year, throughout the Middle Ages and long after. The 'Pontifical de la curie romaine', produced in the 13th century, represents a vital moment in the standardisation the popes were seeking, at the conclusion of a long period of work that spans the 8th to the 12th century. Moreover, it directly inspired another Pontificale: that made by the Bishop Guillaume Durand de Mende, who died in 1296, having accomplished the diffusion of the Roman liturgy throughout all the Latin Church. So it marks an essential stage, not only in the history of catholic liturgy, but also that of Christianity in the West. Because it reveals the heart of the Christian mysteries, those familiar with historical anthropology will discover in this book the full meaning of each of the most fundamental rites of Christianity, and understand how they appeared to the participants of yore.
